Money Saving Tips

[ Financial Management : Saving Strategies : Money Saving Tips ]

Too often we measure our wealth and derive our sense of financial self-esteem soley by our salaries - by money coming in. In fact, by improving your control of money going out you can use your income more efficiently and effectively, and instantaneously increase your wealth. Read below for some time-tested money saving tips!

  • Look for free or very low cost ways to heat and/or cool your home. For example, rather than using air conditioning on very hot days, close your blinds or curtains during the daytime to keep the sun out, and close the windows to keep the intense heat from coming in. Open them at night and let the fresh, cooler air into your house. In the winter or on very cold days, do the opposite, using as much natural light and heat to warm your home as possible. The book The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling carries this idea much farther, if you are involved in home renovations or construction.

  • Heat yourself rather than heating your home. A good soft pair of long underwear on a cold day is one of the often forgotten joys of life. Your body is giving off heat all the time, and insulating yourself with proper clothing will help you make the most of it, while cutting down on the need to spend money on external heat sources. Sporting a good thick pair of socks, long underwear, multiple layers of clothing, a blanket or quilt and a funky hat are all ways to help you make better use of your body's own heat.

  • Look for free sources of transportation, reduce car use, and even consider living without a car! While they truly are a necessity for many aspects of many people's lives, the automobile and related expenses (gasoline, insurance, repairs etc.) represents a huge expense for most people. Only a few generations ago, people lived, and lived well without the car. Give some thought to whether you could make more use of the kinds of transportation your great, great grandparents used on a daily basis, such as walking, bicycling and taking the train. These also often have the added benefit of building more exercise in your daily life, and the healthy living associated with this can bring many cost reductions as well!

  • It is been said that the quickest way to increase your wealth is to reduce your needs. Much has been written about the movement of "simple living", which is both a philosophy and strategy for discovering the essence of good and productive living, while expunging all the unnecessary costs, actions and artifacts. Some of the best writers on this subject include Janet Luhrs, Duane Elgin and Georgene Lockwood.
